Ground turmeric can be easily added to rice, pasta, meats, fish, sauces, and countless other preparations to impart its beautiful yellow hue! Its flavor is slightly peppery, mildly bitter, gentle, and not very pronounced.

It is also a key ingredient in many spice blends, providing a subtle flavor but primarily contributing its magnificent color. It is found in numerous Indian (curry), Caribbean (colombo), Arabic (ras-el-hanout), Reunionese, Thai, and Cambodian blends. In fact, every yellow-colored spice mix owes its hue to turmeric.

This product is derived from the rhizome (the root of the plant, also called "finger"), dried and ground into a fine powder. The preparation involves boiling the rhizome, removing the skin, drying it in the sun, and then grinding it—no easy task due to its hardness! The result is a brilliant yellow powder, almost fluorescent in appearance.

Despite its nickname, Bourbon saffron (some omit "Bourbon" to create confusion with the "real" saffron), its flavor and price are entirely different! However, in dishes like paella, when combined with real saffron, it provides a vibrant yellow color much more intense than saffron alone, without altering the latter's exceptional and inimitable flavor.

Turmeric is a perennial herbaceous plant with a rhizome from the Zingiberaceae family, native to South Asia. It is widely cultivated in India, as well as in China and Indonesia. The plant has stems with large oval leaves on either side and a purplish flower at the tip of the stem, resembling garden cannas. It closely resembles its cousin, ginger, which is also full of beneficial properties.

Turmeric is widely used as a yellow-orange dye for fabrics, giving Buddhist monks' robes their distinctive color. Be careful—its color is almost indelible, even on a white tablecloth! It is also the source of the industrial food colorant E100 (curcumin).

Finally, turmeric is recognized in traditional medicine and in the West for its numerous properties. It helps the body combat stress and maintain the effectiveness of natural defenses. It is also an excellent anti-inflammatory that accelerates wound healing. As information spreads, more and more people are using it for its medicinal benefits.

The active compound in turmeric, curcumin, is currently the subject of active research into its properties.

Turmeric's effects are said to be enhanced when combined with pepper.

Long before the discovery of synthetic preservatives, turmeric played a crucial role as a food additive, improving food preservation.
